So I finally tried Upper Crust Pizza on Brattle Street. Normally, I prefer to support small businesses over franchises, but after weeks of seeing those delivery boys with brown boxes on bikes, I figured it was time to check it out.
What UCP lacks in interior ambiance (note: I would not go there for a sit down meal), it certainly makes up for in taste and quality of its slices--they are top rate. On this particular evening, unwilling to commit to a full pie, I ventured for their "slice of the day," --Mozzarella, Tomato Pesto Pizza. While a touch oily from the pesto, the slice had the right proportions of each ingredient: fresh buffalo mozzarella, fresh roasted diced tomatoes and dollops of basil salty goodness. Perhaps more impressive was the crispy to doughy ratios of the crust to pie. It was executed perfectly. At $3 a slice, I was left right of satisfied but not stuffed. Simply put, this is good bang for the ol' grad school buck.
Harvard Square has long lacked a decent down-home pizzeria--until now. Complacent pizzerias (Crazy Doughs, Pinnochios and ,to some extent, Cambridge 1), I'd start preparing (if you haven't already) for some serious competition.
