No More Investment Banks

I am still in disbelief that independent investment banks are no more.  Clearly Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley made this decision out of weakness, but it is still unclear to me what the end repercussions will be. Having worked on Wall St, I find Goldman's decision the most shocking. Goldman has long been considered the Gold Standard...will it now be runner up to Bank of America? Will we see Goldman ATMs on every corner? I'm still unclear if this choice will help the average American in the long run. It seems like this whole situation is about imperfect information and holding our breath.
